MAZIS CHAMBERTIN

2023 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

This is more serious, along with the Cazetiers, the Mazis-Chambertin has the hoped for density. An attractive raspberry fruit lifts the bouquet, and is both sensual and sinewy on the palate. While it has not fully eaten its oak yet, this Mazis is surely heading in the right direction. A fine result. Drinking range: 2032 - 2043 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Nov 2024)

Cask sample. Mid garnet colour. Pale rim. Toasty biscuit nose that is quite unlike its stablemates. Very sweet, oaky start. Almost too embryonic to judge. (JR) Drinking range: 2030 - 2050 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2024)

More oak here on the nose which follows to the palate. Slightly dominates. But the fruit is good and rather sophisticated, just not rich and open. Brooding for now. This drives along with intent - but is hard to read for now.L&S (Nov 2024)

(from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the two parcels total a remarkable 1.20 ha). Firm reduction completely dominates the fruit today. More interesting are the refined and generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors that flash both good power and a more subtle minerality on the balanced and equally austere finale that, like several wines in the range, would benefit from developing better depth. Drinking range: 2035 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2025)

The 2023 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is quite understated on the nose with brambly red fruit, briar and light earthy scents that emerge with time. It's subtle and very different from Roty's Mazis, which I tasted an hour earlier. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced with crunchy red fruit, chalky tannins and a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. I suspect this is a pretty Mazis-Chambertin that will give most of its pleasure in its first decade. Drinking range: 2028 - 2044 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2024)

The Mazis-Chambertin from Faiveley is a step above, with mineral-focused black and red fruit aromas touched with smoke and peppery spice. There is density and weight but the wine is not heavy; instead, there is a lovely balance between the lush fruit and the firm tannins and fresh acidity. To achieve this result, they had to green harvest about 30% of the potential yield in the vineyard. A portion of their 1.56 hectare holdings is also not in production due to replanting. Drinking range: 2030 - 2055 Rating: 96 Charles Curtis MW, Decanter.com (May 2024)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côte de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
