NUITS SAINT GEORGES
2023 1er Cru Les Vaucrains Domaine Chicotot
There is a lovely earthy complexity to the ripe blackberry and fig aromas in this dark, inky wine, accented with oak-spice and mineral notes. The texture is dense but supple. The wine does not lack acidity or grip, but the tannins are cloaked with ripe fruit that make this wine approachable; the finish is very long. The grapes are from 0.24ha, not far from Les Saint-Georges, which explains the depth of flavour. Let this age for at least five years and enjoy over the next two decades. Tasting this after the Rue de Chaux, the Vaucrains is a very different beast. Big, spicy, smoky nose. The oak will need time to integrate. Sweet dark fruit and sweet spice. Very good level of ripeness. A garrigue-esque undertone too, which adds another layer of complexity. It's powerful and intense but there is good acidity, which is much needed. A big wine that needs time but has huge potential.L&S (Oct 2024)
Rather closer to crimson in colour, with a sombre dark fruit enlivened by the stems. Clearly more muscular, stern stuff here with excellent concentration, still in the darker strawberry style. The tannins are refined. You really get the feel of the underlying slabs of limestone. A huge amount still to come. Drinking range: 2031 - 2038 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Nov 2024)

Vinification is traditional, the fermentation beginning after 5 to 6 days of cold maceration and lasting around 15 days, with remontage or pigeage as necessary and aged in barrel with a maximum of 25% new wood. SO2 levels are very low. The wines are well-coloured and well-defined and expressive - lots of personality here, with the village wines (which are all on the Vosne side of Nuits) near 1er Cru quality.
The picture shows Clément and Pascale with the graphic design they've used as the label for the old-vine cuvée 'Papillon de Nuys'.
