Saint Julien

With a choice of so many Châteaux in St Julien, we could afford to be extremely selective in our choice here. It would probably have to start with the all too obvious duo of Langoa and Léoville Barton. Damien Barton Sartorius put them amongst their 2016's and 2019's and a retaste of their 2021 was really refreshing (given that difficult year).

Léoville Poyferré - you almost wanted to drink it right way, so fresh and vibrant. Matthieu Bordes at Lagrange has an exceptional pair of wines and now lots of them in 2023. Japanese Suntory Group own Lagrange and volume, quality and price are the bedrock of their approach here. We've followed them for years. Batting above their class as ever, were Branaire and Talbot - both wonderfully polished and nothing out of place.

Please note that we can source wines in any format if offered by the Château. Just indicate which size you would like in your wishlist order form or email us with a specific request. Bottling charges do apply so please see our Terms for more details.

Yields were 53hL/ha, and the blend is almost the same as the 2022. This is the second vintage made in the new winery. My sample came from a new-oak barrel, but the final blend will include 60%. Lucid purple in color, it has a charming, very pure bouquet, perhaps less opulent than some of its Saint-Julien peers, yet precise. Delicate floral scents permeate the predominant red fruit, never bursting from the glass but unfurling with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly edgy tannins that impart tension, veering slightly more to black fruit on the mid-palate. This is certainly one of the most elegant Branaire-Ducru vintages to date, but it has more weight on the finish (something that has been addressed in recent years.) Understated and sapid, it should be open for business a little earlier than others, but it will age well over 20 to 25 years. A very dark hue, the aromatics here are delightful, with seams of dark and fragrant fruits, roses, violets and dark chocolate, the cohesion and delineation putting this streets ahead of Pavillon, Moulin Riche and Le Crock, all tasted alongside. The palate is fresh, pure and bright, with beautifully dark and savoury fruits, blackcurrants, olives, blackberries, dark chocolate and roses, underneath which there is a wealth of ripe, polished, richly knit tannins, which support the sinewy and bright structure of the palate, as well as the fresh black fruits. It was even more exciting to walk through the portfolio at a leisurely pace with Tracey Dobbin MW, the font of all Ducru knowledge and one of the most open and interesting people I met up with on my tour. In common with other estates, bud break was spot-on, and frost barely troubled the scorers, with only mild issues on the plateau. Flowering was super-abundant (an expression I heard a few times). They left 12 buds per plant and then ended up with 5-8, which was a 50% reduction in the crop. It was costly but critical, and if you cast your eyes down the page, it proved well worth it, too! Interestingly, mildew was less of a problem here than expected. Tracey described this as “a fight that was always winnable” because of lessons learned in 2021. They brought up 50 people from the harvesting team, nice and early, and they dropped fruit and carried out a trie sanitaire: removing partial bunches, cleaning and a little leaf thinning. Tracey noted that cover crops worked nicely, and ‘spot-captures’, which send spores off to a lab coupled with mini-weather-station data, give them a lot of data so they can be incredibly accurate with their treatments. Yields remained healthy, and with nicely aerated canopies, the August heatwave had little effect, but the hot temperatures in early September made everything a little more unpredictable. They started harvesting Merlot on the 8th of September, and the plateau was finished in a couple of days. The rains came on the 21st and 22nd of September, but it was much less than predicted. With no sign of botrytis, they gambled and harvested later despite a slight dilution from around 130 to 110g; they carried out a small amount of bleeding and maintained spectacular fruit quality. Selection-wise, everything was hand-harvested and hand-sorted, and every berry went through a trie optique (even on Madame). The installation of smaller conical-shaped cuves gives rich but soft tannins, and there, a vast collection of seriously intense wines, was made at this property. What strikes me so clearly about this wine is that all these efforts and attention to detail are evident in the glass. Ducru is as fit and supple as I have ever seen it. It is not a big wine but a street dancer: elegant, immensely strong, agile, decorous, and mesmerising. On the surface, this finely tuned Cabernet is the model of decorum, but the explosive perfume and palate crackle with visceral energy and the tasting experience from start to finish minutes later is extraordinarily involving. As the wine moves towards you, you must react, push as it pulls you, and activate the taste buds in differing sequences to onboard all the information held within this cache of flavour. Behind the surface notes, there is a discreet but unrelenting crackle of energy, dark purple, intense, cool, and thrilling. This wine is nothing short of a contemporary version of a great wine from the past. I kept seeing similarities between some shapes and colours that the phenomenal 1961 vintage has left on my flavour memory, but this wine could never have been made 60 years ago. It is a wine of its time, and it is entirely captivating. 19.5+/20 Rating: 19.5+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2024)

I must admit to creating a mental picture, a sort of flavour diagram, in my head as I approach every wine detailed in this report. It layers the vintage conditions with the ‘character’ of the Château. In this respect, I was supremely confident that Léoville Barton would have nailed this wine because the shape of the vintage is almost identical to that of this wine’s indelible personality. It is even more uplifting to report that not only is Léoville Barton a success, but it is also a benchmark example of why this label is so reliable and why it is adored by so many. There is a flourish of spice and oak on the nose that adds drama and detail to the erudite core of cassis fruit, and there is a silkiness here that is cut in two by the super-bright, cooling, crystalline tannins. This wine and the beautiful 2022 vintage will stand side by side for decades, with 2022 looking a little plusher and showy and this delicious 2023 erring on the more classical, debonair side of the fence. 18.5+ Rating: 18.5+/20 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2024)
