Vineyard Aux Croix

A bright dense purple colour. There is more energy to the nose here and this cuvee does not show the wood. Much more red fruit than black, but it is richer and silkier, altogether nearer to full ripeness without a peppery feel. Long succulent finish. Another example of where being able to make a normal crop has resulted in a better wine. Drinking range: 2025 - 2030 L&S (Nov 2022)

Not yet as 'in place' as the basic Chambolle, so harder to taste, but the fruit is darker, there are spicy notes too, all in greater weight and seriousness, but just a bit on the back foot for now. Drinking range: 2026 - 2035L&S (Oct 2022)

A discreet dollop of wood sets off the more deeply pitched aromas of plum, violet and anise. The sleek, intense and delineated medium-bodied flavors conclude in a youthfully austere finale that offers slightly better depth and persistence. The wood treatment does emerge on the finish so be sure to give this a few years so that it can better integrate. Worth checking out. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 89-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2023)

Deep-mid cherry. Crisp raspberry and cherry fruit, seems quite full and generous for the vintage. Elegant and not over-rich, nor pushed to excess. Great balance and charm. Drinking range: 2025 - 2030 Rating: 16+ Matthew Hayes, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2023)

Domaine Christian Clerget

A domaine of 6 hectares, with 8 appellations, run by Christian, Isabelle and their daughter Justine Clerget from their house in the northern end of the little village of Vougeot, which is really in the commune of Chambolle. They have been organic (certified) since 2017, Justine having insisted on it when she joined them, but it sounds as though she was pushing at an open door, because Christian is entirely committed to this approach and clearly believes that good wine starts with the vines.

At harvest the grapes are picked into small cases for the short trip to the winery which really is right in the middle of their holdings. They adapt to the vintage conditions, so that they did 2 pigeages in total in 2019, whereas in 2017, they did one a day throughout the fermentation. In 2018 they did some whole bunch fermentation, but reverted to their normal complete destemming in 2019. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation Christian decants into tank, allows the wine to settle for ten days, then puts the wines into barrel where they stay without racking until bottling. They are using about 30% new wood on the villages and 40% on the Chambolle Charmes and the Échézeaux, and the wines say in barrel for a long élevage of 18-20 months.
