Côte Rôtie

Follow the mighty Rhône River as it flows south from Lyon, and you hit the village of Ampuis where the beating heart and commercial centre of Côte-Rôtie is based. With a little over 340 hectares under vine, spread across the communes of Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône in the north, Ampuis in the centre and Tupins-et-Semons to the south, this is a very small appellation that produces very high-quality red wines only from schist and granite and gneiss-based vineyards.

The wines are structured, bright, fine, floral and long lived. They can equal some of the best expressions of Syrah anywhere in the world and still provide startlingly good value compared to the wines of Burgundy, but one wonders how long they can they remain under the radar?
